Lā Hoʻihoʻi Ea 2014

  

Lā Hoʻihoʻi Ea ("Return of sovereignty day") celebrates the day when, on July 31st 1843, a brief takeover of Hawai'i by a British captain was ended by intervention of the British Royal Navy under Admiral Richard Thomas at a place called Thomas Square in Honolulu.  We carry on the tradition, reminding the United States that it has yet to do the right thing and restore our independence as the British did.

This year's concert & celebration was dynamic, inspired by the DOI Red Ribbons were passed out amongst celebrants, inspired by Liko's "Red Ribbons" performance at the first DOI hearing at the State Capitol in June. 

The song "Red Ribbons" was of course featured at this year's Lā Hoʻihoʻi Ea celebration too.  Lyrics were passed out, with the Queen's official protest printed on the back, for audience members to sing along. 

Pete Doktor and Masa Kato joined Liko and Laulani onstage, playing bass and percussion respectively. It was a spontaneous first-time combo that worked great. 

The band was also graced by Kumu Hula Mālia Helelā, who danced a rendition Of Uncle Harry Kūnihi Mitchell's song, "Mele o Kaho'olawe".

Other highlights of the day were the honoring of patriots Terri Keko'olani and Peggy Ha'o Ross, whose daughter Lili'uokalani Ross accepted the award on her mother's behalf. 

  

Overall, it was an awesome event, full of aloha, 'ohana and beautiful kūʻē. Hope to see you next year!!
